This is why you want to create clean air in the metal industry

Blog: 5 reasons why clean air is of added value in the metal industry

In any work environment, it is important to have a healthy and safe environment. This is certainly a point of attention within the metal processing industry. In recent years, much has been done to improve working conditions in the metal industry. Nevertheless, there is still room for improvement in production halls. You can read here five reasons why clean air is of added value in the metal industry.

1. Health of employees

During most production processes, particulate matter is created, to which employees are exposed during the working day. This particulate matter may also contain specific hazardous substances such as quartz, diesel engine emissions and fine iron and metal particles. Long-term, high exposure to, among other things, quartz increases the risk of developing (lung) cancer. Quartz is therefore included on the list of carcinogenic substances in the Netherlands.

2. Employee productivity

Employees who are exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter during their work can suffer from respiratory problems, headaches, irritation to the eyes and skin, but can also experience concentration problems. This can lead to absenteeism, but it also leads to reduced concentration and activity. Even if employees do not call in sick, an unhealthy working climate has a direct influence on productivity.

3. Corporate Social Responsibility

When a production process generates a lot of (harmful) dust, it is important to keep this under control. Not only for the benefit of the air quality in the working environment, but also with regard to the emission to the outside air. Improving indoor air therefore also reduces emissions to the environment.

4. Health and Safety Regulations

Safe and healthy work is required by law. Employees must be able to work safely and healthily until their retirement, and the Working Conditions Act is in place to ensure this. The Working Conditions Act has limit values for many specific harmful substances such as metal dust and quartz. The Dutch Labor Inspectorate supervises this. In the event of a (serious) violation, the Inspectorate can issue a fine or even stop work (partially) until the violation has been lifted.

5. Extend machine life and reduce maintenance

Dedusting the air also helps protect your equipment. By reducing the dust level, equipment will become dirty less quickly. As a result, less maintenance is required and the service life is extended.

A healthy and safe working environment results in a good working atmosphere and motivated employees. It also increases productivity and limits absenteeism. A clean workplace is not only important for employees, but also for you. Would you like to gain insight into your air quality? Or would you like guidance to achieve your clean air ambition and goals?
